Inorganic mercury makes its way into soils and waterways where anaerobic bacteria convert it to highly toxic methylmercury. Methylmercury accumulates in aquatic animals, including the fish that are a staple of many Amazonian peoples’ diet. Exposure to methylmercury is widespread and often severe enough to result in adverse neurological effects.
