Figure 4.

Transverse sections of primary roots of wild type (A and C) and GAS:BEL5 (B and D) plants. Plants were grown under short-day conditions, and roots were harvested at the 12- to 13-leaf stage. Sixteen to 20 sections were examined for each line. These sections came from random root pieces from three to four plants for each line. These micrographs are representative of each type. Micrographs A and B were stained with toluidine blue to enhance cells in the vascular cylinder. The arrows in D designate xylem cleavage. Sections were viewed and photodocumented with an Olympus BX40 microscope and a Carl Zeiss AxioCam MRc 5 digital camera. Cor, Cortex; Ph, phloem; Xy, xylem.
