Kidney sections from animals receiving sucrose (control), NH₄Cl, KCl, or NaHCO₃ for 7 days were stained for AE1, pendrin, AQP2/calbindin D28k, and DAPI and cells counted for the various markers and distinct segments. The total number of cells counted is given in brackets, for each condition n = 5 animals were counted.
