(a–e) A series of ADF images of Mo_1−xW_xS₂ single layers (x=0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1 for starting materials), showing the disordered atomic configurations for the two elements throughout the mixture compositions. The brighter spots correspond to the W atom sites and the less bright ones to the Mo sites. Sulphur atoms are not resolved here. The corresponding EDX spectra are also shown on the right, confirming the monotonically increasing W content (a–e). The Au peaks originate to the used STEM specimen grid (Quantifoil, ref. 31).
