The pattern column shows a representative sketch of the appearance of the cell surface (cf. images in figure 1 or references); cases 1–3 are elongated rectangular cells, cases 4–6 are approximately circular or hexagonal cells and cases 7 and 8 are irregular leaf epidermal cells.
