Most Symbiodinium cells appeared normal at 28 to 30°C (A,B). Symptoms of reversible early- to mid-stage apoptosis (C) or necrosis (D) occurred at 32°C within 12 h. After 9 h at 34°C, many Symbiodinium cells exhibited symptoms of late non-reversible apoptosis (E) and necrosis (F).
