Long-term exposure to adrenal GCs/stress hormones (red arrows) facilitates aging-related functional decline and vulnerability in hippocampal neurons. Affected cells show heightened sensitivity to extrinsic injuries and disease, causing hippocampal deterioration and eventual cognitive decline.
