Findings in the remote zone and the contralateral hemisphere. Axonal alterations concerning spheroids were less prominent in the remote zone and the contralateral hemisphere (a, black arrows, HE) as compared to the reactive zone. The same situation was found for blood vessels (b, black arrows, HE) and perivascular infiltrations (c, black arrows). All representative images were taken from the remote zone of a total MCAO subject. For the slight inter-group differences (in general less alterations in BM MNC animals), please see main text. Microglial recruitment after total MCAO was diminished in the contralateral hemisphere by BM MNC treatment (d). Scale bars represent 100 μm in (a) and (b) and 50 μm in (c)
