It is involved sequential transformation of tryptophan in a cascade of enzymatic reactions catalyzed by tryptophan hydroxylase (TPH1, TPH2), amino acid decarboxylase (AAD), arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AANAT), arylamine N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT).
