The development of the DCN cluster during various time points. At L3 (A, B) the neurites of the DCNs innervate the optic lobe. (A′, A″, B′) During early pupation, DCN axons innervate the lobula and extend towards the medulla (32 hr APF). (A″) After a retraction process, axons which remain in the medulla start to branch while the other axons retract back to innervate the lobula (42 hr APF). (A‴, B″) At adult stage the axonal pattern of the DCNs is complete (96 hr APF). APF: after puparium formation; DCN: dorsal cluster neurons.
