(A) C. elegans are more susceptible to killing by ΔtreYZΔtreS than PA14 wild-type (P<0.0001). Mutant fer15;fem1 C. elegans animals were exposed to P. aeruginosa strains and survival was determined as described in Materials and Methods. Data at each time point correspond to the average of three plates per strain, each with approximately 40 animals per plate, and are representative of two independent experiments. (B) The Δ42 mutant is more virulent than wild-type PA14 in a murine acute lung infection model. See Materials and Methods for details of infection protocol. The median CFU/gram of lung tissue of mice infected with ΔtreYZΔtreS is 2-fold higher than with wild-type PA14 18 hours post intranasal infection (P<0.05, Mann-Whitney U test). Data are representative of two independent experiments.
