Table 3.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Antimicrobial Therapy with NPs or NP Analogues

Benefits
  1. rapid and easy access to sites of infection as results of small size and amphipathicity

  2. effective removal by host metabolism

  3. various mechanisms of direct antimicrobial action and possibility to target more than one specific pathway

  4. limited bacterial resistance generation connected with their mechanism of action

  5. modulation of key host antimicrobial defense mechanisms

  6. weak immunogenicity connected with their physiologic origin

  7. relatively facile synthesis with the option of modification

Drawbacks
  1. low microbicidal activity that requires high therapeutic doses

  2. possibility of undesirable effects as a result of their complex actions

  3. high sensitivity to various tissue and microbial proteases
