Experimental task. One hour prior to scanning, participants performed a prestudy familiarization task (top). During this task, participants viewed 80 outdoor scene images six times (familiar images) and 40 outdoor scene images once (foils), while responding whether they had previously seen each scene before. During fMRI scanning, participants performed a target detection task. During this task, participants made button presses to a target image, while incidentally viewing 80 familiar scenes (which were presented during the prestudy familiarization task) and 80 novel images.
