Five-level asthma severity score, based on the Global Initiative for Asthma Guidelines (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2002), is shown as numbers in shaded area in body of figure: 0 (no symptoms or medication), 1 (intermittent), 2 (mild persistent), 3 (moderate persistent), 4 (severe persistent). Scores are calculated as a combination of frequency of symptoms during the day (wheeze, persistent cough, shortness of breath, or chest tightness) as well as night symptoms, and medication use (rescue and controller) during the month-long observation period.
