Yields of 5′-bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) positive surviving cells, neuron-specific nuclear antigen (NeuN) positive neurons, CA3 pyramidal-like (non-phosphorylated neurofilament protein positive) neurons and GABA-ergic interneurons in different graft groups. Note that the yields of surviving grafted cells are much greater when they are pretreated and transplanted with a combination of either BDNF, NT-3 and caspase inhibitor (BNC) or FGF-2 and caspase inhibitor (FC), in comparison to grafted cells that are transplanted with no pretreatment (i.e. standard hippocampal cell grafts). The overall yields of surviving neurons, CA3 pyramidal-like neurons and GABA-ergic interneurons are also substantially higher in grafts pretreated and transplanted with either BNC or FC than in standard hippocampal cell grafts. In addition, between the two treated groups (i. e. BNC and FC groups), the yields of surviving cells, neurons, CA3-pyramidal-like neurons and GABA-ergic interneurons are much greater when donor cells were pretreated and grafted with FC.
