ITCd inhibits the ITCv, thereby disinhibiting CeM, allowing BA to excite it. CeM excitation leads to fear responding. Right: The state of the network after extinction. ITCv inhibits CeM, so CeM becomes insensitive to BA excitation. Note that the learning at LA and BA synapses is not lost. CeM inhibition suppresses fear responding.
