Immunosenescence is represented by the decrease in time (age of the host) of function Inline graphic, which drives the decline of CD4+ T cells recruitment. Memory generation is represented by the availability of memory T cells after primary infection (in quantities dependent on the time of primary infection, Inline graphic vs. Inline graphic vs. Inline graphic). Memory maintenance is represented by the slow decline in time of the initial pool of memory T cell, which is due to mechanisms of immune memory dilution. The y axis has no meaning, since the curves only represent the qualitative behavior of Inline graphic, Inline graphic and Inline graphic. The latter two show the same qualitative pattern, but in quantitative terms Inline graphic is Inline graphic. See section Materials and Methods for more details.
