Temporal profile of interleukin (IL)-6 in the ipsilateral cerebral cortex, hippocampus, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and plasma samples. Following trauma, IL-6 levels were significantly increased at various times in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus (A, B). Secondary hypoxia produced comparable levels of IL-6 except at the 24-hour period within the cerebral cortex where levels remained elevated compared to sham controls. In CSF samples, levels were elevated at 3 hours and normalized by 24 hours (C). IL-6 plasma levels showed elevations at 3 hours with prolonged elevations seen at 24 hours in traumatic brain injury (TBI)/hypoxic animals (D). Values are expressed as mean±SEM.
