Butyrate, a short chain fatty acid known to disrupt the basolateral localization of Na/K pumps in MDCK cells, was added to the growth medium. Cells treated with butyrate only slightly depolarized when stimulated after 24 hrs whereas cells without butyrate dramatically depolarized upon stimulation as expected. After means immediately after stimulation. P<0.01 and n  =  5–8 for all data points.
