Rv3852 does not complement the E. coli hns knockout strain. (A) Sequence alignment of E. coli H-NS, M. tuberculosis Rv3852, and Lsr2 proteins. The shaded regions denote the sequence conservation, and the letters below indicate the identical amino acids. Every 10th residue in the sequence is marked either by asterisks or by the exact number. (B) The mucoidy phenotype of the hns KO strain was complemented by E. coli hns, but not by Rv3852. (C) Fermentation of salicin on a MacConkey agar plate indicated that Rv3852 fails to complement E. coli H-NS.
