SMase activity was normalized to the protein concentration of prepared supernatant samples. Sph deletion completely abolished SMase activity, which could be restored by in trans expression of sph driven from the operon promoter region Pplc at different growth phases; OD₆₀₀ = 4, black bar and OD₆₀₀ = 7, grey bar.
