Schematic illustrations of the stimuli, conditions, and results of Section “Experiment 5.” (A) Stimuli and conditions. Vertical apparent motion (AM) sequences were presented for the first three cycles. A probe square was also presented at a randomly assigned horizontal position (±0.8° ) above a fixation point during AM. In the subsequent, final AM sequence, while the horizontal position of AM stimulus was constant in the Without-change condition, the position shifted toward the left or right in the Left and Right conditions, respectively. Then, participants were asked to indicate the final perceived position of the target by adjusting the probe position. (B) Results. The adjustments in the Left and Right conditions were normalized against those in the Without-change condition. The adjustments shifted in a direction opposite to that of AM. Error bars denote standard errors of the mean (N = 8).
