Proposed mechanism of 4’-hydrogen abstraction from RNA, forming base 2-hydroxylpropenals and cleavage fragments containing nascent 3’-PG and 5’-PO4 terminal overhangs (analogous to proposed mechanisms of DNA scission initiated by 4’-H abstraction).39 Other mechanistic variations are possible that give the same products, such as one involving the formation of a tetraoxide intermediate.21 The ROS responsible for 4’-H abstraction were most likely hydroxyl and/or superoxide radicals.
