Figure A1.

Figure A1.

Sketch of the boundary conditions. The simulation box, which has dimensions of lx × ly × lz, is periodically replicated in all dimensions, but the number of copies in the x and y directions approaches infinity more rapidly than the number of copies in the z direction, so that the shape of the resulting replicated system resembles a pancake. Each face of the pancake is in contact with one of two conducting plates (shown at the front and back of figure) maintained at a voltage difference (back minus front) of nzV by an external electromotive force. With the conventions used here, the situation illustrated corresponds to a positive membrane potential V and applied field E; the quantities Q and Qµ (see text) are negative and positive, respectively.
