Figure A1. — Sketch of the boundary conditions. The simulation box, which has dimensions of l_x × l_y × l_z, is periodically replicated in all dimensions, but the number of copies in the x and y directions approaches infinity more rapidly than the number of copies in the z direction, so that the shape of the resulting replicated system resembles a pancake. Each face of the pancake is in contact with one of two conducting plates (shown at the front and back of figure) maintained at a voltage difference (back minus front) of n_zV by an external electromotive force. With the conventions used here, the situation illustrated corresponds to a positive membrane potential V and applied field E; the quantities Q and Q_µ (see text) are negative and positive, respectively.
