Interaction of flap domain with DNA. The β hairpin in the flap domain runs along the narrow minor groove of DNA. Although making no apparent direct contact, residues Arg198 and Asp200 may contact phosphate groups through water-mediated hydrogen bonds (at the resolution of the structure, water molecules in the minor groove are not visible). Distances to the phosphate groups are ∼5 Å, making possible minor groove-bridging interactions.
