(A) Carboxylate-modified polystyrene microbeads (MB) were functionalized with catechol by reaction of the surface carboxylic acids with the amine groups of dopamine using EDC as a cross-linker (pH 5.0, 2 hrs). ζ-potential was measured in 1 mM PBS (pH 7.4) (B) Amine-modified polystyrene microbeads were functionalized with maleimide groups by reaction with the sulfo-succinimidyl moeity of sulfo-SMCC cross-linker (pH 7.4, 30 mins). ζ-potential was measured in 1 mM MES buffer (pH 5.0).
