A smoothing spline (d.f. = 25), shown here against the uncorrected dataset, was implemented to reduce noise in the data and remove zero values. The GRAnn (average annual growth rate) was developed using the smoothed spline values and equation (4.2). I use the GRAnn in this analysis as a proxy for population growth or decline through time.
