TP53INP1 and TP53INP2 co-operatively induce autophagy. Under autophagy-inducing stress such as starvation, TP53INP2 translocates from the nucleus to the autophagosomes, interacts with VMP1, and recruits the critical autophagy regulator LC3 and beclin-1 (Nowak and Iovanna, 2009). TP53INP1 interacts with LC3 via a functional LC3-interacting region with affinity higher than p62, and displaces p62 from autophagosomes.
