Ultrastructural attenuation of lung stretch-induced production of collagen in lum−/− mice. Representative micrographs (× 35,000, n = 3 per group) of the lung sections and total collagen of lung tissue were from nonventilated control mice and mice ventilated at Vt 30 mL/kg for 8 h with room air (n = 5 per group). Control mice and mice ventilated at Vt 6 mL/kg have no increase of intercellular collagen fibers; WT mice ventilated at Vt 30 mL/kg have increased intercellular space and deposition of collagen fibers; and lum−/− mice ventilated at Vt 30 mL/kg show decreased collagen accumulation. *P < .05 vs nonventilated control mice; †P < .05 vs all other groups.
