Figure 10. Antisaliva antibody response following immunization with plasmids coding for Lutzomyia intermedia salivary proteins.

Figure 10

BALB/c mice were immunized with plasmids coding for ten Lu. intermedia salivary proteins, wild-type plasmid (CTR) or they were exposed to uninfected sand flies at the right ear. (A) Two weeks after the last immunization, sera were collected and tested by ELISA. (B) Two weeks after the last immunization, mice immunized with Linb-11 or Linb-7 were challenged in the opposite ear with Lu. intermedia salivary gland homogenate. Ear sections were obtained at 24 and 48 hours post challenge and stained with H&E. Sections were analyzed by optical microscopy under 100× (bars) or 200× (micrographs) magnification and number of leukocytes enumerated microscopically. Bars represent the mean ± SD of three independent experiments (3–5 mice per group), and the sections are from one representative experiment. Asterisks indicate statistical differences (*, P<0.05; **, P<0.01; ***, P<0.001) comparing experimental to CTR immunized mice.
