Life-threatening conditions for which curative treatment may be feasible but can fail.
Cancer, heart defects, irreversible organ failures
Group 2
 
Conditions where premature death is inevitable. Treatment may aim at prolonging life and allowing normal activities.
Cystic fibrosis, Duchenne muscular dystrophy
Group 3
 
Progressive conditions without curative treatment options. Exclusively palliative treatment may extend over many years.
Metabolic disorders, neuromuscular diseases
Group 4
 
Irreversible but non-progressive conditions causing severe disabilities leading to susceptibility to health complications and likelihood of premature death. Severe cerebral palsy
