The nomenclature of gangliosides and other glycolipids are based on that of Svennerholm (1963) and the IUPAC-IUBMB Joint Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature (1977). (A) The glycosyltransferases catalysing the synthesis of each of the glycosphingolipids, including gangliosides, are italicized. GD1aα, GT1aα, GQ1bα and GP1cα are classified as belonging to the α-series gangliosides. (B) Structure of Chol-1α gangliosides: GT1aα, GQ1bα.
