Schematic of possible mechanisms by which Cygb reduces brain tissue loss and improves long term learning and memory abilities under conditions of neonatal HI. Hif-1α was induced by hypoxia-ischemia, and Cygb expression was enhanced by Hif-1α. Expression of Vegf, which could promote angiogenesis, may be up-regulated by Cygb overexpression. Cygb may exert its antiapoptotic function via negative regulation of caspase-2 and -3 expression, potentially leading to reversal of impairments in neonatal rats that suffered from HI.
