Anaesthesia affected (a) prevalence of infection and (b) encystment location of trematode parasites. (a) Significantly more anaesthetized tadpoles were infected by plagiorchiid cercariae than non-anaesthetized tadpoles. Black bar denotes anaesthetized and white bar denotes control. (b) Significantly more parasites encysted in the head of anaesthetized tadpoles but the tail of control (non-anaesthetized) tadpoles. Post hoc multiple comparison tests revealed that the proportion of metacercariae in the head when anaesthetized and the proportion in the tail when not anaesthetized were not significantly different from one another (LSD: p < 0.05), but were significantly different from all other treatments.
