Model for the role of costimulatory molecules in the development of CMV-specific T cell immunity. T cell costimulation is important for the development of MCMV-specific inflationary and noninflationary T cell responses. Whereas CD28-B7 costimulatory interactions are important predominantly during the acute phase of infection, 4-1BB- and OX40-mediated costimulation is important for memory T cell inflation during the persistent phase. CD27-CD70 costimulation is important for both inflationary and noninflationary T cell responses during the course of acute and persistent infections.
