Schematic diagram illustrating the stem cell hierarchy. Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) are pluripotent, and have the capacity to differentiate into cells of all three dermal layers, that is, endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm. Adult stem cells are multipotent, and have a more restricted ability to differentiate, being committed to a specific lineage.
