(a) Schematic illustration of FIDI-MS setup for heterogeneous reaction study. (b) Quiescent hanging droplet of analyte-containing solution on the end of a capillary is exposed to gas-phase reactants for a variable period of time. (c) After a suitable reaction time, a pulsed electric field stretches neutral droplets until they emit streams of positively and negatively charged submicrometer droplets in opposite directions. The reactants and products ions of heterogeneous reactions enter the capillary inlet of the mass analyzer.
