Specific nitrate-dependent Fe²⁺ oxidation activities of a highly enriched culture of “Ca. Brocadia sinica” supplemented with (i) Fe²⁺ and NO₃⁻; (ii) Fe²⁺, NO₃⁻, and penicillin G; or (iii) Fe²⁺, NO₃⁻, and chloramphenicol. Penicillin G and chloramphenicol inhibit the activities of most bacteria but not anammox bacteria. Specific activities were also examined during incubation with added Fe²⁺ only. Additionally, the autoclaved biomass was incubated with Fe²⁺ and NO₃⁻ in the same manner as the control. Error bars indicate the range of SDs derived from three replicated vials.
