Infection with Ysa+ bacteria causes S2 cell death. A gentamicin protection assay was performed as described for Fig. 1 using pYV− strains and allowed to proceed for 22 h. LDH activity in supernatants is represented as the slope of NADH production (ΔOD340/Δtime); the slope for the uninfected lysed S2 cells was set to 100%, and all others were normalized to this value.
