XL280p is virulent in the inhalation infection model of murine cryptococcosis, and it grows as yeast during infection. (A) Each mouse was inoculated intranasally with 5 × 105 or 5 × 106 fungal cells of XL280p, and animal survival was monitored for 40 days. (B) Mice were inoculated with 5 × 105 fungal cells intranasally. Lungs, brains, and kidneys were dissected from sacrificed moribund mice, fixed, and processed for GMS staining to reveal fungal cell morphology in the organs (shown in black).
