The rate of cardiac myofibrillar protein synthesis is decreased in the cachectic ApcMin/+ mouse. Protein synthesis in mice were determined in whole hearts from 20-week-old BL6 and ApcMin/+ mice by tandem mass spectrometry after intraperitoneal injection of 2H5-phenylalanine. Percentage protein synthesis/day was calculated from the ratio of radioactivity in the myofibrillar protein pellet to that observed in the free amino acid pool. Mean values ± SEM (A) and raw data (B). An asterisk (*) indicates significant differences in ApcMin/+ mice from the BL6 age-matched controls (n=6–7 per group, P<0.05).
