Colored scanning electron micrograph of fibers from a nanosilver-impregnated wound dressing. In the presence of sodium ions secreted by a wound, the nanoparticles release silver ions and exert a sustained antimicrobial effect against a variety of organisms, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
