(A) ΔflgE strains were grown for 20 h in PMM containing 1% (w/v) either PEG, dextran or industrially purified mucins (NBS Biologicals). Only in the presence of native mucins is floc formation observed. Scale bar is 20 μm. (B) Liquid cultures of EPS secretion mutants and motility mutants were quantified by CV, as described in Figure 2. The experiments were performed in triplicate. The error bars represent the standard deviations. (C) Boxplots of floc size of wild-type cells and the indicated motility and matrix mutants in PMM with 1% mucins after 20 h of incubation.
