Layout of soil profiles P0 (from the bottom of a trunk to the middle of the inter-row) and P1 (from midway between 2 trees in the planting row to the middle of the inter-row) in each stand showed in a side (A) and top view (B). The distance between rows (I) was 300 cm and the distance between trees in the planting row (2d) was 200 cm, in the stands sampled 1, 2, and 3.5 years after planting. Spacing was slightly different in the 6-year-old stands (I = 380 cm and 2d = 160 cm) for a similar planting density. The maximum depth sampled (h) was 6 m in 1- and 2-year-old stands and 10 m in 3.5- and 6-year-old stands. The width of the soil profiles was I/2.
