The oxidative burst of professional phagocytes (neutrophils, macrophages): the oxidative burst is induced by activation of NADPH-oxidase producing reactive oxygen species, by which phagocytes destroy devoured pathogens. Then myeloperoxidase catalyzes oxidation of chlorides to high bactericidal hypochlorites with participation of hydrogen peroxide [5, 2228].
