FIGURE 5.
Fourier transform mass spectrometry of MaeB, peptide 629–647, which harbors the redox-sensitive Cys-642. NADP-dependent malic enzyme (MaeB) is a protein sensitive toward peroxynitrite stress in E. coli. In untreated E. coli cells (nonstress), the cysteine is almost exclusively found in its reduced form (>99%). In cells treated 16 min with 1 mm peroxynitrite (stress), the redox-sensitive cysteine of MaeB is 18% oxidized.
