Generation of singlet oxygen from 4-nitropyrene. The sample containing 0.9 mM 4-nitropyrene and 20 mM 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine in 95% CH3CN was irradiated at 420 nm, and ESR signal recorded after 1, 5, and 10 min exposure. Control did not contain any 4-nitropyrene. ESR instrument settings were as follows: 20 mW microwave power, 100 G sweep width, 1 G field modulation amplitude, and 100 kHz modulation frequency.
