HM-ICAM-1 supports increased monocyte adhesion under conditions of flow. HUVEC (A) or Cos1 (B and C) cells were transfected with empty vector (EV) or pCMV-ICAM-1 and some cells were treated with kifunensine at the time of transfection to produce HM-ICAM-1. Additionally, some HUVECs were treated with TNF-α (10 ng/ml, 4 h). Static adhesion (A and B) or adhesion during flow at 1 dyn/cm² (C) of THP-1 monocytes was determined as described in materials and methods. For A and B: *P < 0.05 vs. control, **P < 0.05 vs. control, and #P < 0.05 vs. TNF-α by one-way ANOVA. For C, *P < 0.05 vs. ICAM-1 by t-test.
