Images showing metabolic activity of S. oralis adhered to saliva-coated titanium surfaces. Bacteria suspended in PBS were allowed to form biofilms on saliva-coated titanium surfaces in a parallel plate flow-cell system for 2 and 24 hours. The metabolic activity of the cells was assessed using the BacLight CTC Vitality Kit with DAPI as a counterstain. Cells were viewed with CSLM and the proportion of metabolically active (red/pink) cells assessed by manually counting at least 1000 cells. The scale bars represent 10 μm and the inserts show cells in twofold enlargement.
