Table 1.

The effect of naringenin on the production of colonic TNF-α and IL-6 in dextran sulphate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice

(Mean values and standard deviations of triplicates of two independent experiments)

TNF-α (pg/mg
protein)
IL-6 (pg/mg
protein)
Group Mean sd Mean sd
Vehicle 20·8 1·9 34·8 3·7
Naringenin 27·7 2·5 41·1 2·6
DSS+vehicle 184·3 16·1 244·7 13·8
DSS+naringenin 79·4*** 6·8 112·9** 11·4

Mean values were significantly different compared with the DSS-treated group:

**

P<0·01,

***

P<0·001.

Mean values were significantly different compared with the vehicle-treated group (P<0·001).

Segments of mid-colon samples from mice (n 6 per group) were excised and homogenised. The supernatants were assayed for the determination of the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 using the ELISA method (R&D Systems).
